Learning to love yourself may seem like a foreign concept because you have learned not to become conceited, arrogant, or a narcissist. A dictionary definition of conceited: excessively proud of oneself; vain; arrogance: having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities; narcissist: a person who has an excessive interest in or admiration of themselves.

Learning to love yourself may seem like a foreign concept because you have learned not to become conceited, arrogant, or a narcissist.

Here we are addressing love as a verb. Being loving, start with how you relate with yourself. We have multiple parts of ourselves that are alive simultaneously. Inner child work invites us to look at parts of ourselves that are more childlike, while additional parts are the voice of our adolescent, and some parts are adult voices.

The task is to develop a part of your adult self that can nurture your own emotional needs and to discover unmet needs. Your unmet needs may surface as a part of you that is very bold and critical in the manner that it speaks to you. This boldness at times may be cruel and disrespectful in tone and manner. Imagine the relief you will feel if you do not simply take this boldness literally, but rather as a metaphor to breach an unmet need into consciousness; a wake-up call.  Primarily this type of unmet need calls out for a meaningful sense of connection. As you develop your ability to form a meaningful sense of connection with yourself, you become freer from emotional dependency.

This emotional freedom of relying on others for your unmet needs will transform your relationships. You become more trustworthy,  a treasured commodity. With deepening emotional trust and self-reliance can come deepening emotional connection.
